The Program Design
Senior Gala
Senior Citizens have set our history and
culture and have helped build a strong foundation for us, but they are
often alone and forgotten by family and friends. Quite often, the
seniors are seldom recognized and honored for their accomplishments or for
just being themselves.
The Senior Gala was designed to uplift the
spirits of the seniors and let them know they are appreciated. When a
person feels the warmth and appreciation of others, it makes a difference
in their life. Knowing SRHA appreciates its seniors did wonders to
their self-esteem and warmed their hearts. This was not only felt by the
seniors, but the hearts of those who helped to make the night memorable
for them.

Chorey Park Community Room
Renovation
The elderly residents at the
Chorey Park Apartments who were frequently
dissatisfied with the smell associated with the age of the foam
rubber, the really old wall decor, books and magazines,
worn and stained wooden furniture, the opened large picture window and the
depressing atmosphere.
The Chorey Park Room
Renovation program was designed to provide a safe, decent and sanitary
lounge area for the elderly and handicapped residents of the high-rise
building. Since the renovation of the community room, the residents now fellowship in the room and enjoy
television, games, exercising, and making crafts as well as having
socials, Bingo night, movie night and camaraderie with piano
accompaniment.
The
Authority provided a warm, relaxing atmosphere with new paint,
furniture, lamps, wall decor, carpets and draperies. The renovation
has provided the residents with a beautiful lounge to receive guests, meet
together, and to continue services of the Resident Initiative's program. |

Day of Beauty
for Senior Citizens
According to the Senior Resource Center,
"with age, sociologic changes occur between aging individuals, family and
friends due to the loss of peers and contemporaries-a spouse, siblings,
other relatives, old friends and neighbors". This can lead to
isolation unless efforts are made to get out and stay active. The
Authority collaborated with Hicks Beauty Academy to provide "A Day of
Beauty" for Senior Citizens throughout the communities. The full day
of pampering included: haircuts, manicures, facials and a full course
meal. The immediate results from the program were displayed on the
faces of the participants. The Day of Beauty encouraged healthy
living through active social interaction, increased opportunities to meet
new people, created a support network that alleviates loneliness and
isolation and improved physical appearance and self-esteem. The
fresh hairstyles and manicures are gone, but the new friendships will last
forever.
