Section 8          

The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program is designed to achieve three major objectives:  to provide decent, safe, and sanitary housing for very low income families while maintaining their rent payments at an affordable level; to promote freedom of housing choice and spatial de-concentration of very low income families of all races and ethnic backgrounds; to provide an incentive to private property owners to rent to very low income families by offering timely assistance payments.

Public Housing

Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority successfully manages 466 units of public housing for families, elderly, and disabled individuals throughout the city of Suffolk.  These units include: Cypress Manor Apartments, Parker Riddick Village, Hoffler Apartments, Colander Bishop Meadows, and Chorey Park Apartments. Capital Funds

The Capital Fund Program administers the major public housing rehabilitation and development projects to ensure the continued viability of the five public housing communities owned and managed by Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority.

Development

Homeownership

The objective of the Homeownership Program is to help guide, prepare and educate First Time Homebuyers in obtaining safe, sound and decent housing that is affordable to them.  Monthly workshops are conducted by certified trainers from Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority along with mortgage lenders, bankers, realtors, counselors etc.   These trainers discuss topics on budgeting, credit reporting, inspection and other subjects that are crucial in the homebuyer process.   All participants who complete the workshop will receive a Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA) Homeownership Educational Program certificate.       

Volunteer Opportunities

The objective of the Volunteer Program is to introduce skills necessary for making a change and finding a career path for our citizens and program participants, who are unemployed, underemployed or new to the workforce.  This program allows participants to develop attitudes, abilities and competencies required in the workplace.  The Volunteer Program will also assist participants in building the confidence and skills of those who are ready to find and keep a job as a stepping-stone to a better life.

Family Self Sufficiency

Family-Self Sufficiency (FSS) is a program which offers housing assistance  as part of a coordinated linkage to other programs and services to include child care, transportation, personal and career counseling, adult basic or college education, job training and job placement assistance.  The goal of the FSS Program is to assist highly motivated persons to become economically self-sufficient.

 

Tax-Exempt Bonds Information

Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority is the premier issuer of tax-exempt multi-family housing bonds.  The Authority is authorized to issue tax-exempt bonds throughout the State of Virginia.  We issue original, floating and variable rate Bonds.
