What is Homeownership Counseling? The Homeownership counseling sessions help prepare First Time Homebuyers to make the choices and decisions related to homeownership. In this educational program, participants review and receive material on the home buying process that will help them better understand the responsibilities and expectations of a homebuyer. At the end of the sessions, participants are required to complete a budget workshop and quiz upon receiving certificates from Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA). These certificates may enable participants to receive incentives on financial programs. For additional information please contact SRHA at (757) 539-2100 or email SRHA@Suffolkrha.org. Scheduled sessions may be found at www.vhda.com or by clicking here. Result of the Program Since the initiation of the program in 1998, there has been approximately 550 participants in the homeownership sessions. Many of these participants have successfully purchased homes in various areas, including 10 single-family homes built by Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority in the Orlando Community. Lease to Purchase The Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority initiated a Lease to Purchase Program available to individuals and families in the Orlando Community. This program was made available for prospective individuals who were not quite ready for homeownership but would be able to achieve this goal within 24 months. Homebuying Assistance Downpayment and closing cost assistance, up to $2,500.00, is available to low-to- moderate homebuyers purchasing homes in the Orlando section of Suffolk. Homebuyers must attend the SRHA Homeownership counseling sessions to qualify for the assistance. Promoting Homeownership In an innovative approach to promote
