Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Function

In an effort to enhance local collaboration, promote community planning and develop partnerships which reduce barriers for employment, promote self-reliance, and independence for unemployed Suffolk citizens, Sections 8 and Public Housing participants and their families, through SRHA, have established a hands-on job training Volunteer Program.

This partnership provides work experience and/or training to our citizens and program participants who are also receiving TANF and are unable to obtain paying employment.  Participants work with competent supervision for a specific number of hours weekly as determined by our Human Resource Manager and the Section 8 Resident Initiative.

The participants of this program are currently unemployed and receiving TANF and food stamps through the Department of Social Services and rental assistance through the Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority.  The Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority serves as work sites for the Volunteer Program and encourages and recognizes the importance of volunteers by studying and recording their achievements and bestowing awards on outstanding volunteer activities.

The Result and Success of the Program

The Volunteer Program features the real world advice of workers from all walks of life.  All of the participants are inspired with their courage and determination by learning the personal and professional skills that employers seek. Since the inception of this program, SRHA has assisted several participants in their endeavors to achieve economic independence as a result of the skills acquired through this program.

Participants have been successful in obtaining employment opportunities with various industries such as the City of Suffolk, Department of Social Services, Department of Parks and Recreation, MCI, Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority, child care providers, banking, nursing care, line production and retailing.
